Isn't Job Hunting Fun? 4 tips + more

No I'm not crazy, and yes it's sarcasm. Trying to find a job as a new grad with limited experience is stressful. Now let's throw in being on a work permit and as a result being limited to only jobs in the field of your degree and having to find that job within a limited time frame. Your stress level is now multiplied by 1000. Having been in this position, I've found that I've had to give the same advice a number of times to new grads who are also international students. So instead of trusting my faulty brain each time, I figured that it was time to write everything down. This is not everything but it's a start.

1. Your Resume

  • Use a professional email address - you know exactly what I mean so I need not drone on.
  • Have a skills section that contains soft skills along with hard skills. This article on Indeed is one of many that explains the differences with examples.
  • Try to keep the duties that you had under each job to 3 points. A resume that's too long is a bit much to read.

2. The Job Search

  • The job may not seem like your dream job but you'll gain experience. Also, there may be an opportunity for upward mobility within the workplace so give it a chance.
  • Yes, yes I know about student debt and cost of living, so money matters. However, there are ways to make it work even if the salary isn't great - a roommate or part time online gigs are ideas to keep in mind.
  • Research the company before the interview! Know what the company does, the job description, and how you are suited to the position.
  • There are many job boards out there and I have listed these below. Use them all!

3. The Interview

  • Be Early!
  • Dress Well - Business Wear or Business Casual.
  • Know the name(s) of the person(s) that you'll be meeting and their role(s).
  • Have a few copies of your resume with you.
  • Smile, breathe, and have a firm handshake.

4. Job Boards:

These are just a few that I've used and there are many more out there. I'll update this post as I find more.

  • Indeed
  • LinkedIn
  • Glassdoor
  • WayUp
  • Tribaja
  • Otta
  • ZipRecruiter
  • Simply Hired
  • Dice
  • Monster
